1. There is / There are

« There is » + singulier, « There are » + pluriel. Questions : Is there… ? / Are there… ? Négations : There isn’t… / There aren’t any…

There is a sofa in the living room.

Il y a un canapé dans le salon. (singulier)

There are two bedrooms upstairs.

Il y a deux chambres à l’étage. (pluriel)

Is there a garage?

Y a-t-il un garage ? (question singulier)

Are there any shops nearby?

Y a-t-il des magasins à proximité ? (question pluriel)

There isn't a balcony.

Il n’y a pas de balcon. (négation singulier)

2. Prépositions de lieu

in (dans), on (sur), under (sous), next to (à côté de), behind (derrière), in front of (devant), between (entre), near (près de), opposite (en face de), above (au-dessus), below (en dessous), upstairs (à l’étage), downstairs (en bas).

The sofa is next to the window.

Le canapé est à côté de la fenêtre.

The table is in front of the sofa.

La table est devant le canapé.

The bedroom is upstairs.

La chambre est à l’étage.

The kitchen is between the living room and the dining room.

La cuisine est entre le salon et la salle à manger.

The keys are on the table.

3. Comparatifs

Adjectif court : + -er than (bigger than). Adjectif long : more + adjectif + than (more expensive than). Pour « moins » : less + adjectif + than.

This apartment is bigger than my old apartment.

Cet appartement est plus grand que mon ancien. (court : + -er than)

The city center is more expensive than the suburbs.

Le centre-ville est plus cher que la banlieue. (long : more + adjectif)

This neighborhood is quieter than my old one.

Ce quartier est plus calme que l’ancien.

This house is less expensive than that one.

Cette maison est moins chère que celle-là. (less = moins)

4. Should / Shouldn’t

« should » + base verbale donne un conseil ; « shouldn’t » déconseille. Pas de « to » après should.

You should contact the landlord.

Vous devriez contacter le propriétaire. (conseil)

You should repair the leak.

Vous devriez réparer la fuite.

You shouldn't ignore the problem.

In my opinion, comfort and location are the most important things.
