📖 Discovering a New Culture

Two years ago, I spent a month in Vietnam. It was my first trip to Asia and everything was unfamiliar: the language, the food, the traffic and even the way people greet each other.

The first days were difficult because I did not understand the local customs. For example, in my country we shake hands, while in Vietnam people often bow slightly. I also learnt that it is polite to take off your shoes before entering a house.

The food was the biggest discovery. Vietnamese dishes are lighter than the meals I usually eat, and street food is much cheaper than restaurant food. Although some dishes were very unusual for me, I tried everything.

Today, I have visited six countries, but Vietnam is still the most fascinating destination I have ever seen. Travelling has taught me that differences are interesting, however similar people are in the end: everybody wants respect, family and a good meal.

1. How long did the writer stay in Vietnam?

2. Why were the first days difficult?

3. What is polite before entering a house?

4. How is Vietnamese food described?

5. What has travelling taught him?

I'd like to talk about Ghana, a country I visited in 2022. I travelled with two friends and we stayed in Accra for ten days. Accra is bigger and much more crowded than my hometown, but it is also the most fascinating city I have ever seen. We visited museums, monuments and a huge local market, because I love discovering how people live. The food was spicier than at home, although many dishes are similar to ours. One major difference is the way people greet each other: they take a long time to ask about your family, while in my culture we say hello quickly. However, the two cultures have a lot in common: family, respect and sharing meals. Since this trip, I have become more curious about other cultures, and I'm going to travel again next year.
