( 04 ) Grammar
🧠 Grammar – Nuance, concession et emphase persuasive
Ces structures permettent d’atténuer une affirmation, de concéder un point tout en gardant sa position, et de mettre en relief l’essentiel de son argument.
A. Hedging
It seems that the market conditions have changed.
Le hedging atténue une affirmation : it seems that + proposition présente l’idée comme une impression.
It appears that the delay was caused by the supplier.
It appears that est légèrement plus formel que it seems that.
It could be argued that remote work increases productivity.
It could be argued that introduit un argument sans l’imposer : c’est très fréquent en débat.
It may be worth considering another option.
It may be worth + gérondif suggère prudemment une piste.
There is some evidence to suggest that flexibility improves retention.
Some evidence to suggest that nuance la force de la preuve.
B. Concession
Although the price is high, the quality justifies it.
Although + proposition complète (sujet + verbe) introduit une concession.
Even though we disagreed, we reached an agreement.
Even though renforce la concession, avec une proposition complète.
Despite the additional cost, the solution is beneficial.
Despite est suivi d’un nom ou d’un gérondif, jamais d’une proposition complète.
In spite of their objections, we signed the contract.
In spite of fonctionne comme despite : + nom ou gérondif.
C. Contrast
Our proposal reduces costs, whereas theirs increases them.
Whereas oppose deux faits d’égale importance dans une même phrase.
While I understand your position, I cannot accept it.
While peut exprimer le contraste ou la concession en début de phrase.
The offer is attractive; however, the deadline is unrealistic.
However relie deux phrases et se place après un point-virgule ou un point.
The price is high. Nevertheless, the guarantees are excellent.
Nevertheless est plus formel que however et introduit une phrase nouvelle.
D. Advanced persuasive structures
The agreement would not only reduce costs but also improve efficiency.
Not only… but also… met en relief deux avantages : les deux éléments doivent être de même nature grammaticale.
What matters is finding a sustainable solution.
What matters is + gérondif ou nom met l’essentiel en avant.
The reason why we requested a discount is the increase in volume.
The reason why… is… explique une cause en la mettant en relief.

📖 Persuasion Without Pressure
Persuasion is an important communication skill in both professional and personal situations. However, effective persuasion does not necessarily mean forcing someone to accept your opinion.
A persuasive communicator first tries to understand the other person's perspective. This makes it possible to identify common interests and address concerns.
Evidence also plays an important role. Arguments supported by reliable information are generally easier to evaluate than arguments based only on personal opinions.
Another important element is credibility. People are more likely to consider an argument when they trust the person presenting it.
Effective persuasion also requires flexibility. If new information becomes available, a good communicator should be willing to reconsider their position.
Ultimately, persuasion is most effective when it creates understanding rather than pressure.
1. What does effective persuasion NOT mean?
2. What does understanding the other person's perspective allow?
3. Why is evidence important?
4. When are people more likely to consider an argument?
5. What should a good communicator do when new information appears?
