🧠 Grammaire C1 — anglais professionnel

A. Modaux et recommandations professionnelles

En contexte professionnel, on recommande rarement de façon directe : would, may, might et should permettent d’atténuer la recommandation tout en restant clair.

It would be worth considering a pilot project.

We may need to reconsider the current timeline.

Nous devrons peut-être reconsidérer le calendrier actuel.

It might be advisable to consult the stakeholders first.

We should prioritize training before the next phase.

It seems likely that productivity will improve.

The results appear to indicate a communication problem.

This may suggest that the training was insufficient.

To some extent, the delay was predictable.

C. Passive reporting structures

Deux formes : It is believed / suggested that + proposition, ou sujet + be + expected / believed + to + verbe.

It is widely believed that hybrid work improves engagement.

On pense généralement que le travail hybride améliore l'engagement.

It has been suggested that the process is too complex.

The company is expected to announce a new strategy.

L'entreprise devrait annoncer une nouvelle stratégie.

The results are believed to have been underestimated.

Le registre formel utilise l’inversion conditionnelle : Should you require… = If you require… ; Were we to accept… = If we were to accept…

If we invested in training, productivity would improve.

If the pilot had been launched earlier, we would have identified the risks.

Should you require further information, please let me know.

Were we to reallocate the budget, we could accelerate the project.

E. Conditionnels mixtes

Une condition passée avec une conséquence présente : If we had invested earlier, we would be in a stronger position today.

If we had invested earlier, we would be in a stronger position today.

If she were more experienced, she would have handled the meeting differently.

F. Cleft sentences

What… is… et It was… that… mettent un élément en relief : « Ce dont nous avons besoin, c’est… », « C’est … qui … ».

What we need is a clear strategy.

What concerns me most is the lack of accountability.

It was the communication gap that delayed the project.

💬 A Strategic Professional Meeting

John

Thank you for joining me. I'd like to draw your attention to the productivity figures for the last quarter.

Mary

Yes, I've reviewed them. Productivity has declined by almost twelve per cent, which is significant for a department of this size.

John

What, in your view, are the root causes?

Selon vous, quelles sont les causes profondes ?

Mary

It seems likely that the issue is not motivation but communication. Priorities are not clearly defined, and teams often duplicate work.

John

I see your point, but I'm not entirely convinced that communication alone explains such a decline.

Mary

That's a fair challenge. I would add that our digital tools are fragmented: three platforms for the same information.

John

So you would recommend that we streamline the tools before anything else?

Mary

Partly. It would be worth considering a combined approach: one shared platform and targeted training for team leaders.

John

Training has a cost. If we had invested earlier, we would be in a stronger position today, but the budget is limited.

Mary

One option would be to run a pilot project with two teams over eight weeks and measure the impact before scaling it up.

John

That's pragmatic. I'm not sure everyone will welcome it, though. There is some resistance to change in the operations team.

Mary

I understand where you're coming from; however, resistance is often a symptom of unclear expectations rather than opposition itself.

John

What would you propose to mitigate that risk?

Que proposeriez-vous pour atténuer ce risque ?

Mary

We could involve the team leaders in designing the pilot, set clear expectations and provide constructive feedback every two weeks.

John

Taking everything into consideration, I'd support that. What we need is a clear action plan with measurable indicators.

Mary

Agreed. I'll draft the plan: objectives, timeline, resources and three KPIs, and I'll circulate it before Friday.

D'accord.

1. What is the main problem discussed in the meeting?

2. According to Mary, what is the underlying cause?

3. How does John express disagreement?

4. What solution does Mary put forward?

5. How do they intend to handle resistance to change?

6. What does the meeting conclude with?

📖 Professional English in a Global Workplace

Professional English has become the default language of international business, yet fluency alone rarely guarantees success. In a global workplace, employees are expected not only to speak English, but to use it with a level of formality, precision and sensitivity that matches the situation. A message that sounds efficient in one context may appear abrupt in another, and a proposal that seems perfectly reasonable may be rejected because of the way it was expressed.

The first challenge is formality. English offers a wide range of registers, from the very direct to the highly diplomatic. Saying "You must revise this report" and "It might be worth revising this section" communicates a similar expectation, but the professional effect is entirely different. Advanced speakers select their register deliberately, according to their relationship with the listener, the seriousness of the issue and the culture of the organization.

The second challenge is precision. Professional English relies on collocations and fixed combinations: companies allocate resources, address performance gaps, meet targets and mitigate risks. Using an approximate word instead of the expected one does not necessarily create a misunderstanding, but it signals a lack of command that can undermine credibility in senior meetings, where language is often read as an indicator of expertise.

The third challenge is diplomacy. In international teams, disagreement is unavoidable and usually productive, provided it is expressed appropriately. Hedging structures, modal verbs and impersonal reporting forms allow professionals to question a decision without attacking its author. Stating that "the figures appear to suggest a different conclusion" keeps the discussion focused on evidence rather than on personalities.

Cultural differences add a further layer of complexity. In some professional cultures, a direct "I disagree" is a normal contribution to a debate; in others, it may be interpreted as a personal confrontation. Similarly, silence may indicate agreement, reflection or discomfort depending on where the meeting takes place. Because these conventions are rarely explained, they are often discovered only when a misunderstanding has already occurred.

Interpersonal awareness is therefore inseparable from language competence. Effective professionals observe how colleagues respond, check understanding rather than assume it, and reformulate when a message does not appear to have been received as intended. They also recognise that their own norms are not universal and that adapting is not a concession but a professional strategy.

None of this means that clarity should be sacrificed to politeness. On the contrary, the most respected communicators combine both: they state their position clearly, support it with evidence, acknowledge legitimate objections and propose a way forward. Ultimately, advanced professional English is less about vocabulary size than about judgement, that is to say the ability to decide what to say, how to say it and when saying nothing at all is the wisest option.

1. What is the main idea of the text?

2. Why does the author compare "You must revise this report" and "It might be worth revising this section"?

3. In the text, "undermine credibility" means:

4. Why does the author mention silence in meetings?

5. What can be inferred from the final paragraph?
